Web Services

For those of us who are trying to keep up with technologies and phrases people like to frequently use, here is an explanation of what is a Web Service.

I know Web Services have been around for some time now, but I don't think most people know what they are.

Bringing up "what is a web service" is dangerous around these parts. You don't want to get me started on a tirade about how people equate "Web Services" with SOAP.

**grumble** I hate those people.

I'm looking to understand what a web service is myself. I hear the phrase thrown out there way too loosely and think it's not properly understood by 95% of the people who say "use a web service".

1. Make a pot of coffee
2. Walk three feet to J$'s room.
3. Say, "J$, xxx told me SOAP was the only proper way to implement web services, is that true?"
4. Sit and listen to 12 hour tirade.
