The Folding Workbench Project

I had yesterday off, so I decided to complete one of our house projects - building a folding workbench in the garage. I made most of comments in the pictures, so please view the pictures for details.

2008.02.18 - Workbench Project

I have an open issue with the table design, so I'm looking for input here. To secure the legs in place, I am using a 5" 3/8" lag screw in each leg, screwed in from the top, through the table, into the leg. The pro is that it secures the leg - the con is that I have to screw and unscrew it every time. Though it's not the end of the world, it's as easy as just dropping down the table.

I would rather not use the screws, but I still need a way to secure the legs in place. I am open to ideas. Bring them on!

Comments

A) Run two cables from the front corners back up to the wall, removing the need for legs completely.

B) Run a beam across the bottom of the legs, and then hinge onto that further supports that run along the floor back to the wall. It's an ugly double-hinged solution, but could provide the support to keep the legs in place via gravity rather than your screws each time.

C) Just don' let Anna park there.

D) Buy a new house with a bigger garage.

A) I think that would be putting a lot of force on the studs and wouldn't provide much shock absorption or sturdiness when hammering things on the table.

B) I think I understand what you're saying, and I thought of that too. It's definitely a Plan B or C.

C) Next

D) Clearly, the best solution, but certainly not practical at this time :-)

Use a gate type support that hinges to the wall and swings horizontally.
